Introducing Our New Director: A Profile of Excellence and Leadership

PROFILE

Prof. Richard Akwasi Buamah is an alumnus of KNUST, Kumasi, Ghana who graduated with a Bachelor’s and MPhil.  degree in Biochemistry and had his PhD in Water Treatment Technology at the University of Wageningen & UNESCO-IHE, Institute for Water Education, Delft, in The Netherlands.

Prof. Buamah is an expert whose work spans the areas of water treatment, water quality, environmental microbiology, environmental impact assessment and groundwater treatment where he has fervently contributed to assessing areas where water quality issues are predominant. 

He has about 25 years of experience in the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene sector. His experience covers the monitoring and evaluation/performance assessment of WASH technologies in Africa; formulation of technologies introduction and scalability framework; screening of water quality of surface and groundwater resources; development of filters for contaminant removal from water and wastewater; building capacity and evaluation of WASH interventions.

Prof. Buamah has supervised a number of BSc, MSc and PhD theses in his area and has over 40 publications in referred journals and conference proceedings.

He was the Coordinating Dean of the new KNUST Obuasi Campus from 2019 to 2023 and has worked as a consultant on various projects for several national and international organisations and companies including UNICEF, USAID, SAFE WATER NET, Everpure Water Company, CWSA, etc.

Prof. Richard Akwasi Buamah is currently the Centre Director of the Regional Water and Environmental Sanitation Centre Kumasi (RWESCK) appointed by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). He doubles as the Head of Civil Engineering Department in the College of Engineering, KNUST. Owing to his rich pool of knowledge, it is expected that his leadership contributes to the Centre’s mission and vision of advancing knowledge in water and environmental sanitation for sustainable development and to be recognised globally for producing high-calibre graduates with knowledge and expertise in WASH to support the industrial and socio-economic development of Ghana and Africa.

Prof. Buamah is married and blessed with 6 children.
