Short Course on Hydrological Modelling Using HEC-HMS for Real World Applications
Regional Water and Environmental Sanitation Centre, Kumasi (RWESCK)
27 – 31 October, 2025
Kumasi, Ghana

Introduction
As the frequency and severity of climate extremes increase and urbanisation accelerates, the demand for scientifically grounded hydrological modelling has become increasingly critical. Hydrological modelling plays a vital role in simulating the hydrological behaviour of river basins, particularly in regions where direct observational data are limited or unavailable, a challenge often encountered in developing countries. As part of its commitment to capacity building, the Regional Water and Environmental Sanitation Centre, Kumasi (RWESCK), under the auspices of the AUDA-NEPAD African Network of Centres of Excellence in Water Sciences and Technology (ACEWATER III), is offering a 5-day residential short course on hydrological modelling. This intensive short course provides a comprehensive presentation on hydrologic modelling using the Hydrologic Engineering Centre – Hydrologic Modelling System (HEC-HMS) tool, with an emphasis on the transformation of precipitation into watershed runoff.
This short course titled ‘Hydrological Modelling Using HEC-HMS for Real World Applications involves the combination of structured hands-on practice and analysis of real-world case studies, where participants will develop competencies in simulating rainfall-runoff processes, calibrating hydrological models, and applying model outputs to urban flood assessment and water resources management.
-
Objectives
The course aims to offer both theoretical understanding and practical proficiency in hydrological modelling using the HEC-HMS tool. By the end of the course, participants will be capable of simulating rainfall-runoff processes, interpreting watershed behaviour, calibrating models, and applying their results to real-world challenges in flood risk management, water resource planning, and environmental decision-making.
-
Target Audience and Prerequisites
The course is open to 20 participants. In the selection process, priority will be given to scientific staff and researchers (PhD and MPhil candidates) involved in hydrological/hydraulic research and/or projects related to water resources assessment and decision making, engineers and planners involved in flood risk management and watershed assessment. All participants are expected to come along with a functioning laptop.
