As part of activities marking Global Handwashing Day 2022, Master of Science students at the Regional Water and Environmental Sanitation Centre, Kumasi, (RWESCK) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi have embarked on an outreach programme at the Ampabame Basic School near Ejisu.
The programme which was under the theme: βUnite for Safety-Clean your Handsβ saw students and resource persons from RWESCK creating awareness through demonstrations on handwashing practices, music, and health talks to educate the pupils on good hygiene practices.
A Member of Faculty of RWESCK, Professor (Mrs.) Esi Awuah, stated that there has been massive public education on handwashing, however, a visit to many schools and public places reveals that there are no or fewer facilities for handwashing. Professor (Mrs.) Awuah continued that there should be clean water and soap for handwashing. She also advocated for more facilities for handwashing to be cited at entrances of edifices to ensure effective handwashing to prevent diseases.
The Project Accountant for RWESCK, Rev. Isaac Kofi Adu, stated that it costs the Centre about Five Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHC 5,000.00) for the entire exercise. Rev. Adu led students of RWESCK to present veronica buckets, liquid soap, hand sanitisers, tissue hand towels, and snacks to the Ampabame Basic School.
Receiving the items, the Headmistress of Ampabame Basic School expressed her appreciation to RWESCK for the event and the donation. She hoped pupils and teachers from her School would put the knowledge acquired to good use as well as the handwashing items.
