Technology Development Process and Commercialization

Abstract

Africa lags in the development and exploitation of technologies and innovation to address national
and regional developmental needs. To address this challenge, adequate intellectual capital and agile
technologically skilled engineering and built environment professionals need to be trained for
Africa. These skilled labour force will contribute to the development and exploitation of innovation
through entrepreneurship, to accelerate the needed development and thereby, bridging the huge
technological and developmental gap that currently exists.
To facilitate this transformative agenda, the World Bank Africa Centre of Excellence in Regional
Water and Environmental Sanitation (RWESCK), KNUST in partnership with AWD Consult Inc.,
The USA seeks to build capacity through a series of webinars. The first in this series of webinars is on
the technology development process and commercialization. This module is structured to provide more
practically oriented knowledge and insights into technology development processes, and subsequent
commercialization efforts including, the procurement of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and the
Licensing of Innovations to derive economic returns and societal benefits.
Development of innovation capabilities and competencies in intellectual property rights, coupled
with entrepreneurship and business, dynamism should facilitate the elevation of practitioners and
contribute to the evolution of high-caliber professionals, able to exploit emerging technologies,
leading to improved employability, job creation, and ultimately to the bridging of the developmental
and technological gap.
